How to Prepare for a Cremation Scattering Service

Home / Cremation / How to Prepare for a Cremation Scattering Service

Planning a cremation scattering service can be an emotionally and logistically challenging process. The decision of where and how to honour a loved one’s memory is deeply personal, and many families struggle with the lack of a permanent place to visit and remember. This uncertainty can add stress during an already difficult time, making it harder to find peace and closure.

Choosing a cemetery for cremation scattering allows you to create a lasting memorial that provides a physical space for reflection and remembrance. At Woodlawn Memorial Park, we offer designated scattering options to ensure your loved one’s memory is preserved in a dignified and meaningful way. Our compassionate team is here to guide you through every step, ensuring a smooth and respectful process.

Planning a Cremation Scattering Service

Choose a Location

Here at Woodlawn Memorial Park, we offer two scattering location options for families:

  • The Royal Belvedere: A grand granite structure in our Cremation Garden.
  • The Bed of Life: A lovely garden with new and historical plantings.

A bronze plaque is available to purchase with either option that would be placed on a communal granite memorial. These permanent memorials serve as a tangible connection to the past, providing a place where future generations can pay their respects and research their heritage.

Organize the Service

After you have selected your location, you will work with one of our professional coordinators to schedule a date and time for the service to take place. Here are some considerations for preparation:

  • Gathering Loved Ones: Decide who will attend the scattering ceremony. This can be a private moment or a gathering of family and friends.
  • Service: Plan the elements for the service such as formal speeches, prayers, or a moment of silence. Some may choose a less formal program containing favourite songs, funny stories and even the sharing of favourite treats.

What to Expect During the Scattering

Scattering cremated remains is a deeply personal experience, and each service can be unique. Here’s a general outline of what you can expect from our team:

1. Preparation

When preparing for the cremation scattering service, our team ensures everything is in place to provide a respectful and dignified experience. We will place a sign at the roadway near the scattering location to guide attendees.

Depending on the chosen scattering option, the Royal Belvedere will be open or an area in the garden will be prepared. A member of our Grounds Team will be there to greet you. Their role is to assist with the scattering or guide you through the scattering process and answer any questions you may have.

2. Scattering the Remains

During the scattering of the remains, take your time to ensure the moment is as meaningful as possible. Some families choose to participate in scattering the remains themselves, allowing those attending to assist if desired.

If you feel unsure or uncomfortable about performing the scattering, one of our team members is available to help. They can perform the scattering while family and attendees observe, providing support as needed. You may choose between scattering tubes or scattering directly from the container the remains are placed in.

3. Closure and Reflection

Once the scattering is complete, a team member will close the Royal Belvedere and replace the mulch in the garden, ensuring the remains are respectfully placed back into the earth. You may choose to conclude the service with final thoughts or a closing prayer, providing a moment of reflection for everyone in attendance.

Post-Scattering Considerations
